Two regional chapters have combined efforts and resources to educate local college students about the benefits of ready mixed concrete.

VRMCA Southwest and VRMCA Blue Ridge have partnered with Virginia ACI to schedule two Engineering Dinners at local universities. The first is scheduled for Monday, March 2nd at Virginia Military Institute beginning at 5:00 pm. The second will be held the next day, Tuesday, March 3rd at Virginia Tech University at 6:30pm.

Both dinners will feature guest speaker Derek Hodgin, a Forensic Investigator with Construction Science and Engineering. Derek is actively involved with investigations of failures in mid-level wood construction projects, and acts as an expert witness in litigation cases involving such failures. He will be discussing some of his findings in failures in wood constructed buildings, and how building to the code with that type of material is causing many of the problems. Derek will also talk about the benefits of building with alternative methods like concrete.

In addition to the dinner at Virginia Tech, the chapters have also coordinated a career fair on site that will take place from 4:00pm until 6:00pm. The career fair is exclusive to VRMCA members and will allow member companies the opportunity to chat with students about future employment or internships available. There is no fee associated with participation in the career fair. To learn more about the Virginia Tech Career Fair, please contact George Kuhn via email or at 540.998.6112.
