Earlier this year, Amazon announced that they would be building two new facilities located in Suffolk, Virginia and Chesapeake, Virginia. Since the announcement, ground has been broken and construction has kicked into high gear. In fact, two VRMCA members – Capital Concrete, Inc. and Titan America – have been tapped to supply the concrete for the larger of the two projects located in Suffolk’s Northgate Commerce Park.

Capital Concrete, Inc. is supplying the concrete for the paving. All 20,000 cubic yards of it! That has meant a few early morning start times for their drivers; as early as 2 a.m. multiple days a week.

The Titan America crew has been involved in the project since February 2020 when they supplied Menard, Inc. with 15,280 yards of auger-cast grout for ground stabilization. They are now in the process of supplying Baker DC, LLC with more than 100,000 cubic yards of concrete for the slabs and footings. The slab mix – which accounts for 88,000 cubic yards – will include 7.5 pounds of Forta Ferro fibers per yard. And since this will be a robotics center, the floors will feature a “super flat” finish so the robots can run smoothly.

The schedule is very aggressive with a goal of having much of the concrete done by the end of March 2021. So just like the Capital Concrete team, the Titan team is starting their days as early as 2 a.m. and placing as many as 900 cubic yards per day.

The Suffolk location will have a footprint of more than 822,000 square feet and be four and a half stories high. Total overall square footage for the robotics fulfillment center will come in at approximately 3.8 million square feet.

Both the Suffolk and Chesapeake locations are scheduled to open in 2021.
