Back in October 2017, ground was broken on the 139,000 gross square foot Virginia Tech Carilion Biomedical Research facility. As you drive by the site, you’ll see the progress being made with concrete being placed in several areas. Proudly supplied by VRMCA-member Boxley Materials Company.

Boxley – working closely with VRMCA concrete contractor-member Procon, Inc. – has been delivering concrete on-site since mid-2018. Boxley has provided approximately 6500 cubic yards to date. This includes – in the simplest terms – a “concrete box” that will house sophisticated imaging equipment as part of the Comparative Oncology Research Center. The project also features 2580 cubic yards of a lightweight concrete mix at 4000 psi for the elevated slabs.

Most recently, the team at Boxley was awarded the site package for the project, which includes the concrete paving work that will add another 975 cubic yards to the project. This portion of the job is slated to begin this summer.

The grand opening of the facility is scheduled for 2020. Check out the progress that’s been made with this time lapse video by Skanska.
