Title

Fall 2007 Convention Recap by Amanda Snyder, Communications Coordinator

More than 150 attended the Fall Convention at the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Sept. 9-11. Overall, attendees welcomed the format change and new location, which was more family friendly.

The Convention kicked off on Sunday, Sept. 9th with 48 golfers participating in the tournament held the Heron Ridge Golf Course.  Lines of grey clouds passed over participants while they warmed up.   Skies went grey and rain poured for a few short minutes, but it cleared before the 12:30 PM shotgun start. The winning team included Tyler Johnson of Rappahannock Concrete, Bob Sells of Titan America, Joe Bradshaw of Commercial Ready Mix Products and Sammy Davis of Grace.

On Sunday night a beach party was planned at the home of NRMCA President and VRMCA past president Boo Twohy, but Hurricane Gabrielle was threatening to ruin the party with rain and wind. The reception was moved to the Hilton, but the mixer-truck ice sculpture and the steel drum band were still on hand to add to the festivity. The VRMCA thanks Twohy and her family for graciously opening their home to members.

On Monday, Sept. 10, members heard from George Mason University economist Stephen Fuller, as well as Titan America's Gary Woolard who spoke on workers' compensation. Regional VRMCA Chairs also updated members on concrete promotion around the state. Mike Hoagland with Command Alkon informed members on using GPS, and Erin Ashley with NRMCA explained what makes concrete one of the most "green" choices in new building materials.

Attendees had a free afternoon on Monday, and the weather was very cooperative. Monday night members and their families enjoyed shrimp, scallops and cocktails at the Hilton's impressive Sky Bar located on the rooftop of the hotel, which offers one of the best views of the boardwalk and city.

Following the breakfast buffet on Tuesday, members and their families were treated to a presentation on sleep and sleep disorders by Dr. Christopher Winter, a neurologist with Martha Jefferson Hospital. Participants had many questions for Dr. Winter both during and after the informative and entertaining presentation.

Thanks to all attendees and speakers who made this event possible. We look forward to seeing all members at the Spring Convention in Williamsburg in 2008!
